Willamette Valley, Oregon
The Willamette Valley Wine Country extends 150 miles south from Portland along the Willamette River, framed by the Coast Range to the west and the Cascades to the east. The valley's combination of marine-influenced climate, volcanic Jory soils, and long growing season (particularly the gradual cooling in September and October) produces conditions closely analogous to Burgundy's Côte d'Or the acknowledged world benchmark for Pinot Noir. Oregon Pinot Noir accounts for over 60% of all Pinot Noir produced in the United States, with the Dundee Hills AVA at the center of gravity. The Yamhill-Carlton and McMinnville appellations have developed strong individual identities, with McMinnville's Third Street increasingly recognized as one of the best wine-focused restaurant rows on the West Coast. The Eola-Amity Hills appellation to the west is known for cooler, more minerallic wines. Beyond wine, the valley preserves significant agricultural heritage: the French Prairie around St. Paul was Oregon's first settled farming community, and the valley floor is still predominantly farmland producing hazelnuts, berries, grass seed, and hops. The town of Newberg anchors the northern wine region; Salem, Oregon's capital, is the valley's central urban hub.
