About The Cascades

The Cascades, Washington

The Cascade Range divides Washington into two distinct climate zones and serves as the backbone of Pacific Northwest outdoor recreation. At Snoqualmie Pass (elevation 3,022 feet), four ski areas operate in winter and convert to mountain biking and hiking terrain in summer. The historic Stevens Pass corridor follows US-2 through the Skykomish River valley, past the Bavarian village of Leavenworth, to the apple and orchard country of Wenatchee. Lake Chelan, a 55-mile glacially carved fjord-lake in the eastern Cascades, offers ferry access to the remote resort community of Stehekin at its head reachable only by boat, float plane, or foot. Cle Elum and Roslyn (the town that stood in for Cicely, Alaska in Northern Exposure) preserve their coal-mining history alongside growing wine and brewery scenes. The Cascades Scenic Loop a 400-mile circular drive connects many of these destinations into a cohesive multi-day journey. Crystal Mountain, adjacent to Mount Rainier, offers the highest ski terrain in Washington with gondola access to summit views in all seasons.
